A methodology to determine size and shape of plots for sugarcane plantation Scientia Agricola
Cherri,Adriana Cristina; Vianna,Andrea Carla Gonçalves; Ramos,Rômulo Pimentel; Florentino,Helenice de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Brazil is the largest sugarcane producer in the world and the leader in the production of sugar and ethanol. Although sugarcane has become an important factor in the Brazilian economy, cultivation has presented many issues, for example, the problems due to burning before the manual harvest. The Brazilian authorities have approved a law that prohibits this practice and mechanized harvesting has thus become the most fitting approach. Given this development, areas for sugarcane plantation must be properly rebuilt to accommodate the new way of harvesting. The main characteristic demanded of sugarcane plots to use harvesting machines is that they must be rectangular. In the present paper, we propose a methodology for dividing the plantation area into...

CAN BASAL CUTTING BLADE WEAR AFFECT SUGARCANE REGROWTH? REA
Bernache,Leonardo; Tedesco-Oliveira,Danilo; Oliveira,Luan P. de; Corrêa,Ligia N.; Silva,Rouverson P. da.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane harvester cutting blade wear increases ratoon damages and losses, impairing sugarcane regrowth. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of basal cut using ratoon damage and loss indexes and correlating them with effects on sugarcane regrowth. Harvest parameters such as plant height and position, damage and loss indexes, and stem length were evaluated every 30 min, following statistical process control (SPC) assumptions. Blade wear was examined during three harvesting shifts (0-8 h, 8-16 h, and 16-24 h). Sugarcane regrowth was assessed by counting number of tillers and measuring plant height and stem diameter. The second harvesting shift showed better quality in terms of damage and loss indexes, and plant height and stem diameter....

Physiological and ultrastructural analysis reveal the absence of a defined abscission zone in coffee fruits Bragantia
Brandão,Isabel Rodrigues; Silva,Dayane Meireles da; Souza,Kamila Rezende Dázio de; Boas,Lissa Vasconcellos Vilas; Santos,Meline de Oliveira; Silva,Fábio Moreira da; Alves,Jose Donizeti.
ABSTRACT In order to investigate the existence of a possible abscission zone in the binding region between the peduncle and the coffee fruit, as well as the biochemical events involved in fruit ripening, we studied peduncles and fruits of Coffea arabica L. cv. “Icatu amarelo”. Coffee fruits were harvested at different maturation stages by using specific intervals of detachment force. It was observed a breakdown in the cells of the connecting region between peduncles and fruits throughout the maturation process. This disruption is probably caused by increased activity of the cell wall-loosening enzymes (polygalacturonase and cellulase) as well as by higher levels of lipid peroxidation in the final maturation stages. In general, physiological differences...

Pine Harvest Impact on Soil Structure of a Dystric Cambisol (Humic) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Costa,Adriano da; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano; Costa,André da; Warmling,Maria Tereza; Magro,Bruno Afonso.
ABSTRACT Traffic of heavy machinery at harvest and log extraction causes structural degradation of the soil, but studies on the effects of forest harvesting on soils with high organic matter content and exchangeable Al are scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of mechanized forest harvesting operations on a Dystric Cambisol (Humic) with high organic matter (more 50 g kg1) content and exchangeable Al (more 6,0 cmolc kg-1), reforested with Pinus taeda L. The evaluated harvesting system were the whole-tree, in which the feller-buncher cuts and lays the trees down in bundles; the skidder drags the tree bundles up near a road; and the harvester delimbs and cuts the trees into short logs, stacking them on the roadside to be loaded onto...

Productivity, quality of fruits and architecture of Jalapeño pepper at different planting densities Horticultura Brasileira
Ragassi,Carlos Francisco; Zucolotto,Juliana; Gomes,Lucas M; Ribeiro,Cláudia SC; Madeira,Nuno Rodrigo; Reifschneider,Francisco José B.
ABSTRACT Mechanizing the harvest of Jalapeño pepper involves changes in the production system. Spacings between plants in rows (10 to 40 cm; 60 cm fixed between rows) were evaluated in relation to plant architecture, productivity and fruit quality of cultivar BRS Sarakura during three years, in a randomized complete block design with five replicates. Productivity (41.9 to 78.8 t ha-1) and plant height (40.1 to 47.3 cm) responded linearly to density; on the other hand, productivity per plant responded negatively (0.48 to 1.04 kg plant-1). The stem first bifurcation height was little influenced. Fruit chemical analyses were carried out in the second year of the experiment; spacing significantly influenced pH (5.36 to 4.84), total titratable acidity (TTA)...

Spatial variability of soil physical properties in two management systems in sugarcane crop REA
Carvalho,Laércio A. de; Meurer,Ismael; Silva Junior,Carlos A. da; Centurion,José F..
The aim of this study was to characterize the spatial variability of soil bulk density (Bd), soil moisture content (θ) and total porosity (Tp) in two management systems of sugarcane harvesting, with or without burning, in a Haplustox soil, in the 0-0.20 m layer. The study area is located in Rio Brilhante, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in Eldorado Sugar Mill. The plots have presented 180 m length, and 145.6 m width, totaling 90 points distributed in the form of a grid of nine rows by ten columns, with points spaced 20 m from its neighbor. Soil samples were collected at 0-0.20 m layer in 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 crops. The harvest with burning system had a higher density compared to mechanized harvest, in the two study periods. The moisture content as...

Paixão,Carla S. S.; Voltarelli,Murilo A.; Santos,Adão F. dos; Silva,Rouverson P. da.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane mechanized harvesting can lead to serious risks to the longevity of plantations when improperly operated, and may cause damages and disturbances in the remaining ratoons in the field. In this sense, this study aimed to evaluate the damage and disturbance to the sugarcane ratoons by the base cutting quality of two-blade models through statistical process control. The experiment was carried out during the 2015/16 growing season in an agricultural area of the Moreno Mill, located in Cravinhos, São Paulo, Brazil. The sugarcane harvester models A8800 (Machine 1) and BE1035 (Machine 2). The sugarcane variety cultivated in both treatments was SP80-1816. Thirty points were sampled per harvester, with 10-minute intervals between them. Equations...

WEAR QUANTIFICATION OF BASAL CUTTING KNIVES IN SUGARCANE HARVESTING REA
Paixão,Carla S. S.; Voltarelli,Murilo A.; Oliveira,Luan P. de; Bernache,Leonardo; Silva,Rouverson P. da.
ABSTRACT The mechanized harvesting of sugarcane has increased exponentially in recent years because of the gradual prohibition of burning on the cane fields in mechanizable and non-mechanizable areas. This study aimed to evaluate the wear of the basal cutting knives in two different mechanized sugarcane harvesters, through statistical process control. The experiment was conducted in Cravinhos, São Paulo, in an agricultural area, on July 25, 26, and 27, 2016. Two harvesters with different basal cutting mechanisms were evaluated: harvester A—Model BE1035e (conventional type knife), and harvester B—Model A8800 (racket type knife). The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments. The wear was quantified by measuring the thickness increase...
